Monica J Zimmerman, PT, DPT

Dr. Monica Zimmerman received an Associate of Liberal Arts and Science from the University of Florida/Gainesville in 1989. She graduated from Russell Sage College with a BS in Physical Therapy in 1991 and completed a Doctorate in Physical Therapy from Shenandoah University in 2009. She has worked in various physical therapy settings for over 30 years including orthopedic outpatient, sports medicine with UNCW and NCSU, neurologic rehabilitation, home health care, and inpatient acute care. Dr. Zimmerman has taught for Duke Physician Assistant Program/Human Gross Anatomy Dissection Lab. She is an Adjunct Assistant Professor with Elon University's Doctor of Physical Therapy program where she has instructed in Human Gross Anatomy Dissection since 2013 and Orthopedic Examination of the Spine/ Upper Extremity/Lower Extremity since 2018. She is currently involved in ongoing research for peer reviewed publication. Dr. Zimmerman is honored to be a member of Elon University’s Anatomical Gift Program and the preparation of human donors for anatomic study. She has practiced Trigger Point Dry Needling in NC since her certification in 2016 with Double E Education and began working with Double E Education as a laboratory assistant in 2019. Currently, Dr. Zimmerman is co-owner of Elon Physical Therapy, LLC.

Dr. Zimmerman has been a PT since 1991 working in various clinical settings. She thinks of herself as a generalist, manual and tissue specialist. She enjoys working with the general population, athletes, and all ages. She is grateful for the ability to think outside of the box when it comes to problem solving and treatment options. It is important to her to help you meet your goals for increased function and decreased discomfort and if not, to help you find someone who can. She values you and the relationship with you, therefore, your appointments with her are always one-on-one and individualized to your specific issues and needs. Your appointments may be between 60 and 90 minutes depending on case complexity.
Dr. Zimmerman's interests include general physical therapy, general medicine as it pertains to medical screening, rheumatologic /endocrine/ anxiety and depression and its affect on the neuromusculoskeletal system, psychology and athletics, anatomic study, chemistry, diseases and scientific discovery throughout history. She is also particularly interested in biomechanics and injury prevention in weight lifters, power lifters, and strongman/strongwoman competitors.
